Certified Passive House Tradesperson: Building Envelope (Course Syllabus)

Introduction
This four-day course provides the knowledge and practical skills necessary to build to the most efficient and rigorous energy standard in the world. Open to all trade professionals—as well as designers and consultants—you will learn about the world’s most advanced construction standard, how to implement passive principles in your own projects and everything else required to become a PHI Certified Passive House Tradesperson (CPHT).

Course Description
The CPHT course, delivered by the Association for Energy Affordability (in partnership with the Passive House Academy), provides building contractors need to build to the exacting demands of the high performance Passive House Standard. Focused on building enclosure optimization, this course provides a foundation in passive house principles while stressing the importance of construction fundamentals and proper sequencing.

Participants will learn building techniques that minimize thermal bridging and maximize airtightness, while familiarizing with a variety of high performance materials and components. You will also be introduced to common passive house mechanical systems; including heat and energy recovery ventilation systems, heat pumps, and solar thermal systems. Participants will split their time between interactive classroom and hands-on training, providing access to common passive house materials as students construct a passive house building assembly.

Key Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, attendees will be able to:
• Define the Passive House Standard

• Correctly locate and install airtightness and insulation layers in a variety of construction types

• Correctly install windows while maintaining airtightness, and thermal bridge free construction

• Conduct blower door testing, and air leakage diagnostics

• Identify and accurately interpret data from the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP)

Organization
This is a blended lecture-lab course. Topics are presented in a classroom setting and then followed up with student involvement in the lab. The class is geared towards those with moderate experience in the field.

The Passive House Institute Exam (optional)
The Certified Passive House Tradesperson certification [developed by the Passive House Institute (PHI)] provides proof of expertise in the field of highly efficient building construction. Passive House Tradesperson Certification is achieved by an individual by means of successfully passing a written examination consisting of two parts: Passive House Basics and Passive House Specialization (Building Envelope and/or Building Services).

Passing Score

The examination shall be deemed to have been successful if at least 50% of the total possible marks have been achieved. The results of the examination will be conveyed to the exam participant in digital form via e-mail together with the Certified Passive House Tradesperson Certification. The Certification will be valid for a period of 5 years. Please see the process and application for Certification renewal on www.passivehouse-trades.org.

Time Limit

The written examination shall last 1.5 hours (45 minutes for each part of the exam). If the exam participant chooses to challenge each specialization sections, they will be given an additional 45 minutes for a total exam time of 2.25 hours.

Examination Procedures and Permissible Exam Aids

Prior to the start of the examination, each participant must show proof of identity and complete an application for admission to the Certified Passive House Tradesperson examination.

Only the provided examination booklets may be used for processing the examination. Any other attachments are not permitted. Permissible examination aids include: course documents and manuals, calculators or other calculation aids. The following are not permitted: programmable calculators, mobile phones, and devices the allow communication with the internet.

Disclaimer: By schedule and financial necessity, this course is not meant to produce fully formed Passive House professionals, but rather form a foundation of knowledge that the professional can then take and build on with a lifetime of learning. This is a five day intensive course, with accompanying 3 day equivalent of online teaching, in the basic building science and learning objectives which provides specific knowledge to begin working as a Certified Passive House Designer or Consultant.

Please note: NAPHN reserves the right to cancel or postpone this course at any time. We generally will give registrants two (2) weeks notice prior to the course if we need to make any changes. If a minimum of 12 registered students is not reached 30 days prior to the training, the course will be rescheduled for date to be determined. If cancelled, those already registered will receive the option of a refund or a guaranteed seat at the next planned training.
